So this is another very personal post that has taken me a long time to write. If you have been following the blog you will know that I haven’t always been a clean eating sugar free foodie. It was a search for better health that lead me to first kicking my sugar habit and then turning vegetarian. But there is another side that I rarely discuss. This year it has gotten worse and I have explored a number of ways to become healthier. This is a work in process so bare with me while I get my sh1t together!Read More »
I have two great loves in life, coffee and oats. On my days off I love checking out new coffee shops or trying different blends. I have oats in some shape or form every morning, Bircher museli, overnight oats, porridge and granola. The options are endless. So to combine my two loves and add chocolate…….heaven!
This recipe came to me as I was researching the effect of cacao on serotonin and cravings. Research shows that consuming cacao early in the morning may help to curb cravings in the afternoon, handy if you are trying to lose weight or stay away from the 3pm slump vending machine. The best thing about this breakfast is that it is customisable. Vegan? Just use non dairy yogurt and maple syrup! Forgot to buy berries? Top with banana instead. Easy!
1-2 tsps of instant coffee
1 tsp cacao
1 tsp honey
Dash of vanilla essence
1/2 cup of oats
Yogurt toppings (you can choose whichever you prefer or have to hand)
Fresh berries (again your favourites or whatever is in season)
Using jar for the overnight oats, make instant coffee with 1 cup of water and add cacao, vanilla and honey. Allow this to cool slightly.
Add porridge oats and place in the fridge overnight.
In the morning top with yogurt of your choice and toppings. Dark choclate and raspberries are my favourite. What other flavour combinations would you try? Let me know in the comments!

In the last of our kid chef mini-series, I asked the boys what was their favourite food. By unanimous decision it was….chicken nuggets. Every parent know these little bites are winners with even the fussiest of eaters. Stashed in the freezer they make a super quick meal too. Unfortunately some ready made nuggets contain added salt, sugar, flavours and preservatives. Not exactly healthy fuel for the kiddies. Could we cook chicken nuggets that would keep the boys and me happy?Read More »
The vegetarian trend has gathered pace among celebrities and the general public is following suit. The health benefits of going veggie are well documented but you don’t need to ditch the meat to get the benefits. By introducing beans and lentils as part of main meals, like stews and casseroles or adding kidney beans into Chilli Con Carne. Meatless Monday is now also a thing, so this week we cooked up some mixed bean burgers with the boys for a healthy take on a classic dinner.Read More »
So following on from last week’s article about healthier pizzas this week the boys and I whipped up some healthier ice pops. We all know that traditional ice cream can be full of saturated fat and sugar, not the healthiest of options to be giving kids. But with a little bit of frozen fruit you can make an alternative that is low in sugar and almost fat free! Read More »
The summer holidays are in full swing with most primary schools finishing last week, it’s time to look at some activities to keep the kids distracted over the holidays. I’m a big believer in having a good foundation in the kitchen and am thankful for my mother and home economics teachers for giving me a passion for cooking. It is never too late to start and you will be surprised with what most smallies can achieve with a little guidance. So, I grabbed my two little brothers and a play mate to road test some healthy treats for parties or just fun days.Read More »
